Digitally Sign a PDF on Adobe Acrobat Reader using eSigner CKA

Unlock seamless and secure digital document signing with the eSigner Cloud Key Adapter (CKA), an innovative Windows application designed to work effortlessly with leading platforms like Adobe Acrobat. eSigner CKA streamlines the digital signing process, functioning as a virtual USB token that automatically loads your certificates into the Windows certificate store. Once installed, users can conveniently select their SSL.com certificate within Adobe Acrobat Reader and sign PDFs quickly and securely.

eSigner CKA offers a hassle-free alternative to physical USB tokens since the document signing certificates are stored in SSL.com’s cloud system. Integrating it with Adobe Acrobat Reader provides users an affordable, user-friendly, and efficient way to digitally sign PDFs.

Requirements

  1. A SSL.com document signing certificate that has been successfully-issued.
  2. An eSigner cloud signing subscription
  3. eSigner CKA installed on the computer.

Digitally Sign the PDF

  1. Install eSigner CKA by following this guide.
  2. Open your PDF using Adobe Acrobat
  3. Click the All Tools tab.
  4. Click View More, scroll down and choose Use a certificate
  5. Click on Digitally sign.

  6. Click the OK button.

  7. Select the SSL.com document signing certificate you want to use and then click the Continue button.

  8. Click the Sign button.

  9. Click the Save button.

  10. Success! Your PDF is now digitally-signed!

Note: Using eSigner CKA, a single user can apply multiple copies of a signature on the PDF. This is useful in signing electronic documents like contracts or agreements that require the user to place multiple copies of the signature within one page or across various pages.

Verify the Digital Signature

  1. Open the signed PDF using Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  2. Check the visible signature. Adobe Acrobat will confirm that the digital signature applied to the file is valid.
  3. Click the Signature Properties button to view the details of the signature.

Apply a Timestamp to the Signed File

Timestamping allows for Long-Term Validation (LTV) of PDF digital signatures in Adobe Acrobat. LTV allows your digital signatures to live on long after your original signing certificate has expired.

  1. Click the Timestamp tab, followed by the +New button.

  2. Place a name for the Timestamp and the URL of the timestamp server. On the Server URL field, place SSL.com’s timestamp server address: http://ts.ssl.com

  3. Click on Set Default followed by the Next button. Later on, you can add other time stamp servers by clicking Menu > Preferences… (Ctrl+K)  > Signatures > Document Timestamping.

  4. Click the Save button to save the time-stamped PDF to your computer.
  5. Click Allow to provide permission to the document to connect to the SSL.com timestamp server.

  6. Success! The PDF is now timestamped.

Verify the Digital Signature and Timestamp

  1. Click Signature Panel.
  2. Adobe Acrobat Reader will display the following information: integrity of the document, the name of signer, date of signing and timestamping, and that the signature is Long-Term Validation (LTV) enabled.
